A researcher and scriptwriter in the television industry for 12 years, Heather has worked on shows from The Weakest Link to documentaries for the Discovery Channel. Her love for little people led her to specialize in children’s television where she worked on KTV, KTV Power Edition, KTV What’s Hot and High School Musical: Spotlight South Africa for MNET, amongst others. On the side she volunteered for NGO’s for 14 years working with disadvantaged children in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Vaalwater, Mamelodi, Diepsloot, Soweto and Alexandra. In this context she produced HOPE Worldwide’s ‘Hope for Orphans’, Pamela Nomvete’s ‘The Channeling Program’, footage for Malaak Compton-Rock’s Angel Rock program and The Olive Leaf Foundation’s ‘Kids Club’ for the 2010 World Aids Conference in Austria.
Having researched Early Childhood Development for 5 years and investigated and visited 21 pre-schools to find the perfect one for her son, Heather grabbed the opportunity to start her own in 2008, with both hands.
“I was privileged to grow up on the Botswana border on a game farm, riding my horse in the river beds, reveling in the hot silence of the bushveld, feeling the chill of the fish eagle’s cry running down my spine, chasing ever elusive butterflies, hand rearing baby giraffe, climbing marula trees and squelching out rows of mud pies decorated with seed pods. Life was sublime!
In an effort to recapture the essence of my rich, beautiful childhood for my daughter and all her friends in the city, and wanting to give them the very best authentic Montessori education I possibly could, I founded The Singing Forest Montessori in June 2008.
Here our core ethos is for a child to be fully a child! To suck the marrow out of life and live each moment to the full as they are immersed in endless opportunities to feed the hunger inside them that drives them to play, socialize, explore, concentrate, persevere and master new skills. Through doing so they grow grit, tenacity, proactivity and an incredible desire to continually improve themselves by stretching themselves to master new skills. Hereby boosting their sense of self as they become aware of what they are capable of and fight to up the stakes and master more and more. The Montessori approach empowers each child to become the best they can be and to unlock their unique, individual unlimited potential. This makes them happy and oh so STRONG, from the inside out!
We do not claim to be perfect, but we do promise to love your children as if they are our own and to do our utmost to make them come alive and their hearts sing while they are with us.
From wide open spaces and a beautiful city view to a garden where each indigenous plant was carefully selected to attract butterflies and birds, The Singing Forest is a wonderful environment for children to flourish in. And they do.
By following the child, and presenting him / her with everything they need to thrive, as well as guiding them through the Montessori curriculum, they are perfectly prepared for their primary school years and an easy transition to our elementary school, Chartwell House Montessori Eco School.
For me, The Singing Forest is a ‘Life is Beautiful’ experience, and I hope it will be the same for you.”
